History Theatre streaming first act of new musical about Harold Stassen

30October 2020

The History Theatre in St. Paul is streaming a read-through of the first act of a musical-in-progress about former Minnesota governor and repeat presidential candidate Harold Stassen.

“The Boy Wonder: Stassen Musical,” with book, music and lyrics by Keith Hovis, is available via the St. Paul theater’s website, historytheatre.com through Nov. 5. Stassen was called the Boy Wonder and future of the Republican Party when he was elected governor in 1938 at the age of 31. By 1992, Stassen’s political career ended as a perennial candidate who sought, and lost, his bid for the Republican presidential nomination nine times.

History Theatre will be working on Act 2 this spring. “Boy Wonder” is part of History Theatre’s new works festival, Raw Stages. For tickets and a conversation about the musical in the theater’s “Spilling the HT” feature, go to historytheatre.com.
