New Product Pick > Loonman organic spirits
If you’re looking for some new local spirits to check out to go with those restaurant cocktail kits, Loon Liquor Company, the outfit out of Northfield, recently released four spirits that are now on store shelves.
The release has been highly anticipated. The spirits were originally set to debut in April, but the distillery shut down for three months to lend its hand at producing hand sanitizer for more than 300 organizations including hospitals, police departments, EMS, nursing homes and distribution centers.
The spirits, a mashup of New-American and Old-World styles, are made-from-scratch with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. The Loonman Vodka, Aquavit and Gin are made with wheat and barley from B&T Farms, an organic farm within 15 miles of the distillery.
We are already a fan of this brand, (the coffee liquor, especially, is not to be missed), so it was worth checking out the new offerings to see how Loonman is distinguishing itself in the market.
A pour of the Loonman Aquavit, a wheat and barley-based dill and caraway creation, gave off bright citrus, sweet, earthy and floral notes. It definitely feels festive and will be perfect for the holidays coming up, or when you want to channel a Nordic-themed vibe at the dinner table.
Then there’s the new Loonman Gin, a citrus-forward small-batch organic wheat- and barley-based gin that brightens any drink. Hints of lemon, orange and lime are all in there. It was appreciated that crushed juniper and spicy herbs were also detected, adding depth while not being overpowering.
Next, Loonman Rum, a white rum agricole with Brazilian sugar cane, black strap molasses and apple cider yeast, tastes tropical all the way. It’s also medium bodied, working great with any tropical themed cocktail kits or that tiki drink.
Last but not least, Loon Liquors recently released a Loonman Vodka. While not new to the Loonman Liquor lineup, the vodka has been reimagined and released at the same time as the new spirits. For one, this small batch organic 50/50 wheat and barley-based vodka is triple distilled in Loonman’s 10-plate copper still before being filtered through coconut and house-made birch charcoal. The result is a clean, medium bodied spirit with peppery notes and a mild sweetness. For starters, it works great in a Bloody Mary on game day.
And if you’re looking for other ideas on what to mix the liquors with in addition to using them with cocktail kits or mixing your favorite drink, it’s worth noting there are tons of cocktails recipe ideas on the Loon Liquors website. More than 200 recipes have been compiled from Loon Liquor’s cocktail room out of Northfield. Cheers to that.
